DESCRIBE YOURSELF AS A RUNNER.
I would describe myself as a recreational runner. I like to push myself and break personal records, but my primary goal is to stay fit and have fun.
WHY DO YOU PRIMARILY RUN?
I run for a lot of reasons – fitness, stress relief, and even social interaction. But mostly, I’m a total believe in the “runner’s high”. There’s nothing better than the feeling after a long, sweaty run!
HOW DID YOU FIRST START RUNNING?
My dad got me interested in running. He started running later in life to lose weight and got hooked. We did our first half marathon together in Baltimore in 2007.
WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE WHEN IT COMES TO RUNNING, AND HOW DO YOU OVERCOME IT?
My biggest challenge currently is finding time to run with two kids under three. My best bet is usually nap time, but I’ve started to get them involved – my two and half year old loves cheering me on while I’m on the treadmill!
WHAT IF ANYTHING, HAS RUNNING TAUGHT YOU?
Running has taught me that my body is stronger than I thought. I was always in awe of people that ran marathons – it seemed unreachable. To date, I’ve done three with no plans to stop.
DO YOU DO ANY CROSS-TRAINING, AND IF SO, WHAT?
I’ve recently started going to a personal trainer to work on strength training. I’m realizing how beneficial it is to my running – I have more energy and endurance when I do my long runs!
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER RUNNERS?
Plan a destination race with some runner buddies! My most memorable runs involve pre-race city exploring and post-race hotel relaxing.
WHAT IS THE WORST THOUGHT THAT HAS CROSSED YOUR MIND DURING A RACE?
During my first half marathon in 2007, I swore I would NEVER do another one. It’s been almost ten years and I’ve done many more, including three full marathons! I’m glad I didn’t give up so easily back then.
